1:18 scale model from the Japanese GP 1991, resized to 3 meters

For this project, the 3D scan was performed using a non-contact 3D scanning system (Creality Raptor X 3D SCanner). Due to various occlusions and hidden areas, it was not possible to obtain a ‘watertight’ model, but this was not an issue as the scan data would be used as a reference to reconstruct a 3D CAD model in Geomagic Design X. The windscreen and cockpit were fully redesigned to better accommodate the driver.

Hardware and Software used:

  • Raptor X 3D scanner
  • Creality Scan Software
  • Geomagic Design X
  • Materialise Magics

The top and bottom of the car were 3D scanned separately, resulting in two separate chunks.

Both chunks were easily aligned in the Creality 3D scanning software by marking a set of common points

The final 3D mesh was exported as an STL fi le and imported into Geomagic Design X for the parametric Reverse Engineering stage.
